Luther Tucker was born in Brandon, Vermont; he apprenticed to a printer in Middlebury, relocating with his employer to Palmyra, New York, in 1817. He travelled as a journeyman, and went into business as a printer on Long Island, and later Rochester, where he founded the Daily Advertiser. He also founded the first agricultural journal in the United States, The Genesee Farmer, and, later The Country Gentlemen, eventually merging the two with The Cultivator.
